On March 17th a homeless man that was beaten severely a few days earlier died in the Hospital. He was beaten in a robbery attempt at 8pm on the friday before St. Patricks Day. Since he was homeless he didn't have any money so he was beaten for nothing. In the police report an investigator was quoted saying that the person who assaulted him did not mean to kill him, he just wated to rob him. There is also a quote from the deceased sister "I know they didn't mean to kill him, but I really think that justice should be done," she said. I think that way of approaching this is terrible. If you hit someone hard enough to kill them and your intention was to forcefully rob them then it should be first degree murder. How often do we hear something like " I just meant to kick the shit out of him, but I didn't expect him to die." Most of the people that commit these crimes are repeat offenders, and what do we give them when they are caught? Three square meals, a comfy bed, cable television and no serious work duties. Its a joke, the reason crime is so abundant is because the punishment is a joke. There are only a few prisons in the country that really punish hardcore offenders. I think militant conformity is the only way to treat these people. Enlist them into the marines with an extended boot camp. If you are convicted with less than a ten year sentence you should have the choice to enlist in the hardest military segment available. Private Joker and Snoball would appreciate some more Pyle's.
I like this idea, Lord knows we can use more soldiers. The chances of rehabilitation are far greater for someone serving military duty, then someone sitting in a prison. They could receive training, serve their country and hopefully come out of it a better person. I wonder how the odds of getting killed in Iraq compare with the odds of being killed in Sing-Sing or Rikers?
The 10 years or less sentence is a start as far as criteria goes for those who are eligible. How about only first time offenders? Should we allow N-time losers to be eligible?
Also, aside from the time of the draft, one of the great things about our military is that it is filled with people who have chosen to serve their country. They have volunteered. When you throw in people who more or less forced into service does this decrease the competence and will of our fighting forces? Would this increase the changes of dissension, mutiny, etc.?

It is difficult to get your opinions across in Annapolis due to the limited public involvement in governmental affairs. Is it just, me, or is there a strong correllation between the crime spike and the unprecedented growth in the immigrant community?
